Communications Authority Press Release (March)

This press release summarises the Communications Authority ("CA")'s decisions following its 61st meeting held in March 2017:

CA Approves Termination of Power Star Limited ("Power Star")'s Non-domestic Television Programme Service Licence

The CA approved the application of Power Star to terminate its non-domestic television programme service licence with retrospective effect from 28 November 2016.  The CA noted that the termination of licence was a commercial decision of the licensee.

Following the termination of Power Star's licence, there are 15 non-domestic television programme service licensees in Hong Kong providing over 180 satellite television channels targeting viewers in the Asia Pacific region.

Broadcast Complaints

The CA considered three complaint cases in respect of Television Broadcasts Limited ("TVB")'s non-compliance with the Generic Code of Practice on Television Programme Standards ("TV Programme Code") -

  1. complaint against the television programme "TVB 49th Anniversary Light Switching Ceremony" (跳躍飛騰TVB邁向50周年) broadcast on the Jade Channel of TVB on 17 October 2016. The CA decided that TVB should be seriously warned to observe more closely the relevant provisions in the TV Programme Code;
  2. complaints against the television programme "Programme Presentation 2017" (2017 TVB節目巡禮星光晚宴) broadcast on the Jade Channel of TVB on 10 December 2016. The CA decided that TVB should be seriously warned to observe more closely the relevant provisions in the TV Programme Code; and
  3. complaint against the television programme "HK Boys In A British School" (嘩鬼上學去之農夫篇) broadcast on the Jade Channel of TVB on 22 September 2016. The CA decided that TVB should be advised to observe more closely the relevant provisions in the TV Programme Code.

Details of the above cases are at Appendix.
